Some Tips On How To Improve Eyesight

Taking care of your eyes starts when you are born and they put eye drops into your eyes to kill bacteria. There is more to do for natural eye health and that is to take some eye health supplements. Of course, food can provide the nutrients that supplements provide except that food don’t have them in concentrated form. Here are a couple of natural eye health supplements – lutein and zeaxanthin. These supplements are part of the caroteniod family of which beta-carotene is a member. They are natural fat soluble yellow pigments found in some plants and are considered anti-oxidants. They are found in your retina and crystalline lens. They serve to protect your eyes from the harsh effect of UV light.

Anti-oxidants are your main defense against degradation of your eye sight. Continual use of anti-oxidants by eating fruits and vegetables and taking anti-oxidant supplements will protect your eyes for a long time. Anti-oxidants attack free radicals in your eye lens and retina. Free radicals attack eye cells causing them to solidify and malfunction.

Lutein and Zeaxanthin are known to provide protection against age-related macular degeneration, AMD, cataract formation, and some forms of cancer. In a clinical study, 1700 women over the age of 50 were tested during a period of 15 years. Those women that supplemented with these nutrients showed a 40% less risk of developing AMD.

In other clinical studies, those who had the highest intake of lutein and zeaxanthin have a 22% decreased risk of developing cataract.

Here are the foods that provide you with the lutein and zeaxanthin that you must have for natural eye health care:

Leafy green vegetables, kale, spinach, turnip greens, collard greens, romaine lettuce, for lutein

Yellow corn, kiwifruit, squash mango, honeydew, broccoli, and egg yolks for zeaxanthin

Other eye health supplements that will keep your eyes young are:

* Vitamin C – 500 mg

* Vitamin E – 400 IU

* Beta-Carotene – 15 mg

* Zinc (as zinc oxide) – 80 mg

* Copper (as cupric oxide) – 2 mg
